He Live's: No, you're not talking to a wall... It appears that you are correct.

I tried to think of an answer as to your inquiry about why it took 20-years to bring back this tune. The only thing I've noticed over the years is that tunes got dropped when the new keyboard players appeared on the scene --- I am musically inept so please don't ask for an explanation; it's just an observation.

I'm wonderin' if it's true that one way or another this darkness got to give,

It is about Altamont isn`t it. Maybe they just didn`t want reminding. And after 20 odd years, when the memories had softened they realised what a corkin` tune they`d been neglecting.

good evening sir,

my guess is that maybe it was too topical or too political for jer....? it is open-ended enough lyrically, but still, aside from bob's environmentalist/activist songbook of the mid 80s and 90s, this was perhaps the dead/jerry's most political tune....something he seemed to shy away from in general.
